Kamalakhya pens letter to Amit Shah; urges protection of minorities of Meghalaya

Karimganj, Jan 24 : Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha has written to the Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah bringing to light the recent atrocities over Bengalis in Meghalaya.

It can be mentioned here that a Couple from Shillong, namely SK Choudhury and his wife Kalpana Choudhury began their ‘hunger strike till death’ at Khyndai Lad, near old Meghalaya Legislative Assembly gate in protest against the alleged atrocities committed against non-tribals in Meghalaya. Their hunger strike coincides with the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Purakayastha wrote that several such incidences of violent attacks on Bengalis in recent times have put them to life-threat.

“The continual hate threats and atrocities on the linguistic minorities, mainly Bengalis, of Meghalaya have gone too far in recent years. The Bengslies, who have been inhabitants of the State since time immemorial, have been subjected to a situation of fear and helplessness due to such threats and atrocities” he wrote.

Last year attack on Ramkrishna Mission, attack on Bengali boys playing on playground by Khasis have not even attracted the proper attention of State Government despite several complaints and appeals resulting in rise of such incidences, he mentioned.

MLA appealed HM Shah to immediately intervene and take necessary steps for the protection of lives and fundamental rights of the linguistic and religious minorities of Meghalaya.
