Patharkandi, Nov 11 : In a terrible accident, as many as ten persons died in a deadly collision at Baithakhal area under Patherkandi constituency in Karimganj district, on Thursday morning.
Karimganj SP Padmanabh Baruah who rushed to the spot informed that one person was found alive but later succumbed to injuries enroute to hospital. The incident took place at around 7:30 am; he said adding that force is deployed to avert any further untoward development while the investigation is in progress.
“10 people, including five women and two children, killed in head-on collision between truck and autorickshaw while returning from Chhath Puja celebration. We have impounded the truck and trying to nab the driver” Karimganj SP Padmanabha Barua said to media persons during revisiting of the spot later on the day.
On the other hand, Patherkandi MLA Krishnendu Paul, in a social media post has urged upon the people to maintain calm. ” In constant touch with the Police and localities for identification of the deceased and first aid to the injured person. Request everyone to maintain peace in the area. As per current information they were pilgrims returning from “Chaat Puja Ghat” Paul wrote.
The names of the deceased persons are Duja Bai Panika, Salu Bai Panika, Garuv Das Panika, Shambhu Das Panika, Lalon Guswami, Puja Gorh, Deb Gorh, Sanu Ree, Manglae Karmakar and Tupu Karmakar.
In separate tweets, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Forest and Environment Minister Parimal Suklabaidya condoled the deaths and assured that the truck driver would be arrested.
The Chief Minister alaso announced Rs one lakh compensation for the families of the victims.
