Karimganj, Dec 6 : In another instance of limestone from Meghalaya being clandestinely ferried and sold to other states, 21 heavily loaded trucks with illegal transportation of the mineral were intercepted and seized by Karimganj police on Thursday. They seizure were done near newly constructed toll gate over NH8, Karimganj district.
However the seizure creates a sense of doubt over police as, according to locals, daily 100s of limestone loaded trucks passes over this border to reach Tripura but police were never seen to seize those vehicle whereas on Thursday 21 such trucks were intercepted.
Police personnel, overlooking the seizure, informed that they received tip off acting on which they swung to action and seized the vehicles. Police official further informed that around 40,000 rupees will be fined per truck, however during the seizure there were no sales tax officials to carry out the formalities.
On the other side, drivers of the truck will speaking to media persons informed that they are ferrying limestone from Meghalaya to Tripura for long while by paying bribe in different check gates but on Thursday surprisingly and selectively some trucks were seized by police.
