3 arrested, 3 detained in Karimganj EVM violence case

Karimganj, Apr 3 : Karimganj Police on Saturday, arrested three people for attacking the private car in which the polling personnel along the polled EVM were travelling after the completion of the second phase of polling on Thursday. Three more people were also detained for questioning.

The Election Commission on Friday suspended the presiding officer, three other polling officials and an armed escort official and ordered re-polling at the Polling Station no 149 in Indira M.V. School under Ratabari (SC) assembly constituency after an EVM was found in a BJP candidate’s wife’s vehicle on Thursday night.

The three, that were arrested on Saturday, are Numan Uddin, Chalikur Rahman Khan and Chalek Ahmed and had been produced at court. All the three are resident of Karimganj Kanishail area.

It is worth mentioning that, two separate FIRs were also lodged with the police by the driver of the private car and polling personnel.

Karimganj police in a statement, mentioned that they are arrested for creating mob violence. “These persons have been arrested for indulging in rioting and assaulting public servants on duty and causing damage” statement said.

The Karimganj District Magistrate has also ordered a magisterial inquiry in connection with the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) found in a BJP candidate wife’s vehicle on Thursday night.
