Karimganj, Nov 19 : Karimganj Police on Sunday arrested an accused on charges of setting fire and vandalizing a 200-year-old temple in Karimganj’s Ratabari.
However, the accused got injured in police firing while he tried to flee from police custody.
The accused identified as Anwar Ali, allegedly tried to flee from police custody in Ratabari after he was arrested from Tripura last night. Ali is undergoing treatment at Ramakrishnanagar Hospital for bullet injuries.
Karimganj SP Partha Protim Das said that they arrested the accused from Indo Bangladesh border in Tripura.

“While investigating, he led us to his neighbor house where he hid his hand-made gun, a few rounds of bullets, and a sword. While returning from the search operation, Ali tried to escape during which the police shot at Ali’s leg” the official said.
For the unversed, a 200-year-old temple in the Ratabari area of Karimganj, Assam, was reduced to ashes, igniting tensions among the locals on November 6. The incident occurred in the remote tribal village of Damasra, situated in Ratabari’s Rareshara tribal village.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the case and hinted that more people will be arrested soon.
