Hailakandi, June 3: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday will undertake a day-long visit to South Assam’s Barak Valley to take stock of the situation in the wake of a series of landslides that killed 21 persons in three districts.
After reaching Kumbhirgram Airport in Silchar by IAF aircraft in the morning, Chief Minister Sonowal will undertake aerial survey of the landslide spots at Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar districts. The Chief Minister will hold meetings with the senior officials of the district administrations of the three districts on flood preparedness and on COVID-19 situation. Sonowal is also likely to inspect institutional quarantine facilities and isolation wards in hospitals during his visit to the valley.
The Chief Minister will hand over ex gratia cheques for Rs.4 lakh each to the next of kin of those who died in the landslips at Mohonpur Grant and Chandipur Grant under Hailakandi and Algapur revenue circles, respectively. Eight persons, including four children died when huge mounds of earth fell on their makeshift houses in the wee hours on Wednesday.
