Silchar, Nov 10 : The crude bomb which was detected by the Cachar district police nearby an under-construction site along the Assam-Mizoram border five days back was defused on Wednesday.
After several days of trying, the bomb squad was finally able to defuse the bomb on Wednesday. At the same time, the panic among the local population was also eased.
It may be mentioned that the construction workers saw a suspicious object while carrying out the work of casting of a bridge near Khulichhara canal around 9 am on Saturday.
The workers immediately informed the Assam police personnel stationed there. High-ranking administrative and police officials rushed to the spot. The bomb squad was called upon but since it was not possible to deactivate the bomb that day, it was kept few feet beneath the soil.
Bomb experts from Nagaon and Guwahati were trying to defuse the bomb since Sunday, but have not been successful. Locals suspect that the bomb was planted with the intention of damaging the under construction bridge.
On Wednesday morning, Cachar police SP Ramandeep Kaur, with a bomb squad, reached the place where the bomb was kept in Khulichhara. The bomb was defused following standard operating procedures. Preliminary investigations revealed that the bomb was packed in a packet with gelatin sticks attached to the detonator.
The police superintendent said that they are investigating to why and for what purpose the packet was kept there.
On October 30, a low-intensity blast occurred at the Bhaicherra area under Ramnathpur police station in Hailakandi district near the inter-state border.
Six Assam police personnel were killed and 50 others wounded in a violent clash between the police forces of Assam and Mizoram in the disputed area between Lailapur in Assam’s Cachar district and Vairengte in Mizoram’s Kolasib district on July 26.
Meanwhile, Cachar district police have deployed additional security personnel along the Assam-Mizoram border to maintain law and order and to prevent any untoward incident.
