Loss of life continues as truck knocks another life at Katigorah

Katigorah, Nov 18 (Shamidra Paul) : The number of accidents continues in the same pace as cases of theft, robbery, snatching and rape in Katigorah. Another young life was lost, on Thursday, after being mowed down by speeding truck at Kalain bazaar area.

Citizens have pointed the finger towards illegal auto stands and unlawful parking of trucks over the roads. They claim, maximum of the roads are either occupied by autos and trucks or betel nuts businesses, encroaching the footpaths. As a result, the roads are getting narrower causing surge in accidents.

The accident happened around 10 am in the morning, when Altaf Hussain, 25, was going to work on his bicycle. As per the onlookers, Altaf was hit by a car while he was enroute to his workplace. Losing his balance, Altaf fell on the road and was run over by an overloaded truck. He was rescued and rushed to Silchar medical college and hospital but succumbed to his injuries in enroute.

The locals immediately took to protest and blocked the road, demanding immediate arrest of the truck driver, who absconded the spot. The protesters also demanded immediate eviction of the footpath encroachments from the traders and also financial assistance to the deceased’s family.

The blockade was lifted at around 1 pm when Circle Officer Kaberi Rangpi promised to meet the protester’s demands. Regarding the eviction of the road, Circle Officer said that the occupation of the road will be freed shortly. Initially, betel nuts, vegetable traders and auto drivers will be requested to vacate the road on their own after that strict action will follow.
