Two Delhi based female reporters detained at Nilambazar PS by Tripura police

Nilambazar, Nov 15 : Two women journalists reporting on recent instances of alleged religious vandalism in Tripura were detained by the Assam Police at Nilambazaar in Karimganj district of Assam, police said. The journalists had been earlier booked under sections relating to spreading communal disharmony, committing insult with the intent of provoking breach of peace and criminal conspiracy.

A statement issued by the Tripura police informed: β€œTwo persons namely Samriddhi Sakunia, daughter of Gopal Sakunia of Manwar Para, Jharsuguda, Odisha and Swarna Jha, daughter of Ratneshwar Jha of Rohini, New Delhi have been detained by Tripura Police with the assistance of Nilam Bazaar Police Station of Karimganj District, Assam on 14/11/2021”.

As per the two reporter’s account, they were detained by police while enroute to Silchar Airport. β€œThe police here say they have no official order and have received request from Tripura police. We don’t have much idea either. We are waiting for Tripura Police to come here and give us the details” one of the reporter said.

β€œWe are ready to cooperate as both of us (they and Police) following our duty lines. We have not done any objectionable work so as to be arrested by any police, but despite repeated query they are not ready to show any papers for detaining us” said another reporter. The two belongs to Delhi based HW news network company.

Meanwhile, South Karimganj MLA Siddeque Ahmed Khan reached the Nilambazar Poilce station and extended aid to the two female reporters. “I had talks with local Tripura authorities over the recent incidents there and I received good response but today’s action is unjustifiable. The two detained scribes are very young and were only discharging their duties. This is shameful act and they should be freed” MLA said while speaking to media persons.

Two of them are likely to be taken back to Tripura by police tomorrow.
